The sounds of the amazon

Frigate birds (and the occasional blue footed boobie) use the draft from the catamaran to soar through the sky.

There was something so peaceful and calming about laying on a lounge chair on the catamaran and having the birds just soaring above us.

This happened when we were leaving Urbina Bay, Isla Isabella in the Galapagos Islands and heading over to Fernandina Island.

A very short video clip of the panga (zodiac) ride from the docks in Santa Cruz Galapagos thru the marina to the catamaran that was my home for the next week.

The water was very calm when we were there - but we still got splashed...so be sure to bring a bag or rain coat to through over your gear if it is not salt-water friendly (like camera gear, laptops, cell phones, etc)

A few young sea lions are playing on the pier and in the water. Some are super skilled and fly easily from the water to the pier and others have a bit of difficulty.

This was filmed at Fernandina Island in the Galápagos Islands.

We turned the corner from the pier and saw a sea lion and then we looked right - and there was a sea of marine iguanas.

Fernandina Island is a breeding ground for marine iguanas and there were piles like this in every direction. This video is a short clip to show how many iguanas there were in just a small space...and these small spaces of iguanas were everywhere!

One of the clay licks at the Napo Cultural Center is set up almost like a stadium. The covered area with seats is far back so as to not disturb the birds.

We waited for about 2 hours for the Cobalt Winged Parakeets to fly down and enjoy the clay. It was quite a sight to see so many parakeets and their calls were deafening.

The birds stayed on the lick for over 15 minutes before flying off again.

Imagine it's hot and humid, you are in the amazon on a canoe with no one around except your fellow canoe mates. You've seen huge spiders and eyes of reptiles staring at you out of the water...and then you hear this.

this video shows some of the amazon's vegetation but the point of the video is the sounds of the howls. These sounds actually come from the Howler Monkey and can be heard up to a mile away.

All I can say is I'm very glad I wasn't alone in that canoe.

It was quite eerie but at the same time, it almost felt like a ride at DisneyWorld. The greens were perfectly green, the water still, the flowers beautiful, the spiders big (yes, I know, I keep talking about the scary spiders).

A review of the Napo Cultural Center in the Ecuadorian Amazon. You have to have an adventurous spirit to visit this lodge - but it is so worth it!

The logistics were well thought out and executed. The lodge is very comfortable and the amount of wildlife, plant life, and insect life is overwhelming.

After my first epic fail attempt to film hummingbirds at a feeder, I finally got smart and just held the phone in one place and just let them come in and out of the frame.

The snorkeling near Bartolome Island was very interesting. There were hundreds of different colored starfish, tons of little fish, white tipped sharks, and penguins.

The naturalist found some other critters under the outcrops of the shoreline - but I wasn't feeling quite up to going under to look at them. But if you go snorkeling there, you are bound to see a lot.

On this day, the water was a bit rocky.

Darwin Bay, better known for it's bird breeding colonies had tons of sea lions resting on its beaches.

This video compilation was taken just before leaving the island in the early evening. The little sea lion at the end was the one I had been watching all afternoon. He was desperately searching for his mama.

Sea lion mothers leave the young cubs on the beach so they can go feed in the water and then return when they have had enough food (and perhaps enough of a break from the babies). Many of the other mamas had returned but this little one was still all alone waiting for his mama.

The group had to leave the island before the mama returned leaving us to hope that the baby was safe.

In the Galápagos Islands, is an island that is truly special - Genovesa Island. It is a sanctuary for many types of birds. The boat anchored in a crescent shaped bay and across from the cliff, we went snorkeling to find the hammerhead shark nursery. Even though the water was super rough, the area did not disappoint and those brave enough to endure the rough waters got to see the hammerheads.

The video was taken on a GoPro camera by me and the stills were taken by the naturalist.

In the Galápagos Islands, there is an island called Genovesa Island. This particular island is an amazing bird sanctuary. So many species of birds call this island home.

The super colorful Sally Light Foot Crab are actually interesting creatures. The way they move and how they can hang sideways on a lava rock. They have little hairs on their legs. Watching them can be fascinating if you are patient.

This is a short video from Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos Islands. Just a few of the probably thousands of crabs we saw that day.

Hanging over the panga boat at Black Turtle cove with my arm in the water with a GoPro - it was actually quite difficult to film these white tipped sharks. Not exactly sure where the camera was pointing - some of them are out of frame...but it's a little idea of what they look like.

Black Turtle Cove was a special spot with mangroves, birds, underwater critters, and a lot of peace.

Deep in the mangroves, we found birds fishing. In this slowed down video, you can watch the Striated Heron balancing and stretching so far in order to catch some unsuspecting fish.

A fever of Cow Head Golden Rays swim by the panga while touring Black Turtle Cove off of Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos.

I have no idea why they are called Cow Head. They were so incredibly peaceful and graceful as they passed by the pangas multiple times.

Snorkeling off Fernandina Island, there were marine iguanas eating and swimming, turtles, and lots of fish. The iguanas and turtles were eating the green algae off of the rocks.

There is something fascinating about watching them move thru the water with such ease.

A glimpse of a Panga ride through the mangroves on Isla Isabela at the Punta Moreno location in the Galápagos Islands.

Fur seals - they are actually sea lions but much smaller than the Galápagos sea lions and with a lot more fur!

Snorkeling with these guys had me laughing so hard (and yes, you can hear me laughing on the video) -- they were like bullets or torpedos except with extreme grace and athleticism!

One minute they were there and then ZOOM - they were gone!

Although they were not as curious and didn't interact with us as much as the Galápagos sea lions - they were so much fun.

I believe at the end of the video a Galápagos sea lion video bombed. I didn't hear the fur seals make any sounds and this big one was loud...but I'm not positive of which species (sub-species) this one is...do you know?

A short video of fur seal puppies (actually sea lions) playing on the lava rocks on Santiago Island in the Galápagos Islands.

Fur seals are actually sea lions - they are smaller than the Galápagos sea lions and have twice as many fur follicles.

On Santiago Island, we saw a lot of fur seal puppies waiting for mom to come back to feed them.

A very short video from one vantage point that shows the sheets of lava rocks flowing to the ocean. If you look close you can see the red Sally Light Foot Crabs on the rocks.

Sea lions are so graceful underwater - they remind me of ballroom dancers with their ease of movement.

The snorkeling session at Punta Vicente Roca was the highlight to my trip to the Galápagos Islands. The sea lions were so curious and playful, showing off their twists and turns and coming close to check us out.

Not only did we snorkel with the sea lions in the water, but we also saw fur seals (which are actually sea lions) on the cliffs.

Have you ever seen a tortoise walking? This very short video will show you the ackward but somehow graceful walk of the tortoise. I'm always interested to see how other species move and watching a tortoise walk was nothing I've ever seen before.

A trip to the Darwin Center and the Tortoise research and breeding facility was a worthwhile stop.

The tortoises were in natural enclosures and they had many different age ranges to see. Our naturalist explained the program and the importance of saving these tortoises.

The view of part of the lava fields on Isla Isabela at Punta Moreno, Galapagos. The textures of the lava was so varied. From smooth sheets, to ropes to big (and loose) lava rocks...it was as if I was walking on another planet.

Snorkeling with turtles is such a treat. There were so many feeding on the greens on the rocks, swimming, breathing and not paying attention to the human snorkelers.

To get a small glimpse in their world and watch them effortless glide through the water was such a privilege and an amazing experience.

A quick video with the vocalizations of a frustrated young sea lion - waiting for his mama to return from the sea...he tries to get close to the other adults and they chase him away. The puppy looked to be in very good condition, so the naturalist felt the mama would return.
