Follow the Journey:  100 Miles to Protect Tsavo's Wildlife

Enlarge the map to follow the walk day by day.    The path is updated via satellite.    Text messages about the walk will also be listed - also sent via satellite.     Once I have an internet connection, I will also upload pictures - so they may appear on previous day walks.   We won't have internet for the majority of the walk.   The total distance walked and the current temperature (based on the location of the GPS)  is also shown on the map.
There is still time to support Tsavo Trust.   You can donate directly here:   GivenGain

Our day by day itinerary from Tropical-Ice.    Tropical-Ice is the company organizing and escorting the walk.

September 21 & 22

9/21.   Arrive at Hemingways Hotel for a group meeting to discuss all the logistics and safety issues.

9/22.  Early morning transfer to Wilson airport for a 1 hour flight to Tsavo.   Upon arrival, we enjoy breakfast at a lodge then a 2 hour game drive to Mzima Camp.   Lunch at camp and spend the afternoon at leisure.

September 23 & 24

9/23.  Rise with first light for breakfast and start our hike at 7:00 am.   We walk across the vast 8000 square mile wilderness of Tsavo.   The route follows the Tsavo River and we walk along hippo trails walking past thickets of acacia, fig, and other trees and palms.   Reach our new camp around 1:00 pm for lunch followed by a siesta.

9/24.  Today we walk along an intense area of fighting during the First World War.   Many indications of the war still exist.   We walk past Rhodesia Hill and culminates in an exciting gorge before reaching camp for lunch.

September 25 & 26

9/25.  We continue along the Tsavo River through lush riverine forest.   Today we were away from the mountain and enter drier country leading towards the salt water.   Impala, Grant's gazelle, zebra, and giraffe are frequently seen.   Tsavo is the largest elephant ecosystem in the world, and the river is a vital destination for them.
After lunch and a siesta, we have a game drive down the river, returning to camp at dusk

9/26. The Tsavo River leads us to the area where the famous "man-eaters of Tsavo" roamed bak in 1896.   The region sports a large lion population and we have a chance of seeing them as they use the shade of the palms on the banks of the river.   Hearing them at night is also a possibility from camp.

September 27 & 28

9/27.  We drive a short distance to the railway station and continue the walk down the river.   We cross from Tsavo West into Tsavo East.   The Tsavo River flows beneath the Yatta escarpment and forms the Galana River.    We reach our vehicles in the late morning and drive to camp.   After lunch and a siesta, we game drive down the Galana River.   This river is wide and has sandy beaches and palm trees.   It has one of hte largest lion populations in East Africa as well as plains game - including the very rare Peter's gazelle.   Big herds of zebra, hartebeest, impala, and fringe-eared oryx are frequently seen here.   This is also the are of Tsavo's biggest elephant populations.   After the walk, we are met by vehicles and driven back to camp for lunch and a rest.    We game drive along the river in the late afternoon.

9/28.   After breakfast we drive upriver and walk back to camp (we stay at the same campsite again).   This area is wider, palm-fringed with lots of lion, leopard, and cheetah.     We are now in semi-desert.

September 29 & 30

9/29.  A repeat of yesterday.   We drive up river and walk back to camp.

9/30.   Breakfast and walk to the next camp.    Sighting lions is very high probability today.   Lunch at camp and an afternoon game drive.

October 1 & 2 & 3

10/1.  We stay at the same camp today as yesterday and take a morning walk through lion rich country.

10/2.  We have our morning walk down river into lion and elephant rich territories.   We have a picnic in palm trees and then have an afternoon walk arriving to the edge of the park around 6:00 pm

10/3.  After breakfast we drive to the town of Malindi at the Indian Ocean.   We have lunch as a group.   My sister and I have elected to stay in Watamu for a few days of beach time after the adventure to rest and relax prior to starting our safari.

Lisa Roberti - wildlife photographer - with a mug in Sabi Sands South Africa

For as long as I can remember, I've been enchanted by animals. I have spent the last 7 years traveling to wildlife-rich areas of the world with my camera in hand and heart on my sleeve. I've learned about different species and about the lives of individual animals.

I've cried tears of joy, tears of laughter, and tears of sorrow as I watched the lives and deaths of the animals play out in front of me.

Every day I learn more about the plight of animals as well as about their victories. I am on a mission to share what I learn with others so that together we can preserve the wild world for generations to come.

Current Travels

Big Adventures for the end of 2025

September - October is THE WALK.    100 mile walk through Tsavo National Park.    I've been training hard to make sure I'm able to complete the walk.    Before the walk starts, I'll be spending 3 days on safari near Lake Nakuru National Park.    I wanted a few days to get used to the time change before the walk begins.

The actual walk is over 10 days and we'll end at Watamu (the coast) for a few days of relaxation and beach time (rest and recovery).    Then it's off to safari in the Masai Mara.   The safari will be in Naboisho Conservancy and Olare Motorogi Conservancies and then in the southern section of the main Masai Mara National Park.   I'l be staying at a new (for me) camp in Lake Nakuru, Naboisho, and the Mara.  During the safari (Internet permitting), I will be only posting to STORIES on instagram and Facebook.

After returning home, I have a very short time and then I'm off to Costa Rica for some super special opportunities -- can you picture jaguars on the beach hunting turtles?    I actually hope I don't see the hunt / kill.    We'll be staying at a jaguar research station (so very rugged accommodations - talk about getting out of my comfort zone this year).    Afterwards, we'll be heading to more "normal" photographic locations to photograph Costa Rica's most iconic animals.

I'll be spending the rest of the year and the holidays at home this year.

Be sure to follow along on my social media -- I'll be posting STORIES when I can!

🎉 I earned the em

Greys Eden lodge in Maun Botswana. A quick overnight before starting my safari in the kalahari.

It’s a nice hotel with the choice of a cottage or villa. The video is the cottage. My understanding is the villa is a bit bigger but I didn’t see it.

A very nice pool area and lounge areas.

This lodge is not appropriate for anyone with mobility issues as you need to take the stairs to get to the lounge, bar, and restaurant.

The staff are super friendly and nice. It’s about a 15 minute drive from the airport.

My only complaint is the hotel next door had a special permit last night for some sort of party and they had excessively loud music until 5:45 in the morning. No one at this hotel was able to sleep. Very unfortunate damper on an otherwise really nice stay.

There’s a kind of focus in wildlife that stops you.

No noise. No performance. Just pure intent.
This is one of those images that pulls you back into that breath-held second, like you’re right there again.

Available in my store.

I’d love to know if you prefer wildlife art that feels peaceful or intense.

Not every bird of prey gets a second chance.

This one did.

This portrait was taken at a birds of prey rescue in Colorado many years ago. The birds there have been rescued and rehabilitated. The ones healthy enough to fly free are released. The ones that can’t be are kept on as ambassadors, used for education so people can get close enough to actually see what these animals are.

Breakfast with a view.

We were sitting outside overlooking a small lake in Costa Rica, watching birds come and go, when this guy climbed into frame and made himself the main event.

Green iguanas are found throughout Costa Rica, almost always near water: Rivers, lakes, and lagoons. They’re excellent climbers and excellent swimmers, and they tend to stay close to both trees and water.

When one stops right in front of you and you actually look, really look, the detail is extraordinary. The scales. The spines running down the back. Those prehistoric claws gripping the branch.

They’ve been doing this for a very long time.

Are you a fan of iguanas or do the scales “ick” you out a bit?

A crash of white rhinos.

Just resting.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya is one of the most important places on earth for rhino conservation. And sometimes the best proof that it’s working isn’t a statistic.

It’s this. A group of animals with no reason to be anything but at ease.

Anyone want some lunch?

I’m sure this little green bee eater finds his winged lunch very enjoyable. But for me, I’ll take some fabulous Italian food (I’m currently in Rome…hello pasta and gelato)

Whatever your lunch is today, I hope you enjoy it.

Meet the Secretary bird.

One of Africa’s most distinctive raptors, photographed in the Mara Triangle in Kenya.

What nobody tells you is that this elegant-looking bird is a stone cold snake killer. It hunts entirely on the ground, stomping prey with feet powerful enough to take down a cobra.

Its scientific name, Sagittarius serpentarius, means “the archer of snakes.”

Tell me the first word that came to mind when you saw this face.

In Fall 2025, I was a few days into a 100-mile walking safari through Tsavo National Park in Kenya when our guides stopped us without warning.

A few moments later, we saw them.

A family of elephants approaching the river. Females and their babies, moving quietly through the landscape. We eased back, found a spot behind some brush, and watched through the edges, barely breathing. Then the guides moved us quietly to the river's edge and we watched as the whole family crossed.

They had no idea we were there.

I have watched elephants many times before. But they always knew I was there.

This time was different. We were flies on the wall, watching completely natural behavior, undisturbed.

It was one of the most peaceful moments I have ever had in the wild.

What happened as we walked away from that sighting changed everything.

An Orangutan at Camp Leakey Borneo Constructs a Day Nest to avoid the rain #campleakey #borneotravel

Lisa M Roberti July 23, 2025 12:08 PM

Watch as a massive flanged male orangutan enjoys a quiet meal of sweet potatoes at the Camp Leakey feeding platform in the heart of Borneo. These rare, powerful creatures are part of a unique conservation story — one you can read more about below.

📖 Full Story & Blog Post:

This moment was filmed during my journey through Tanjung Puting National Park, where I visited three different feeding platforms and wrestled with the beauty, ethics, and questions that arise when humans try to make things right in the wild.

💬 I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Are you as fascinated by these great apes as I am?

In the Media

I was quoted in East-West News Service for an article about traveling through Africa in different ways.

“Africa offers so many adventures – the typical land safari where the animals in most places completely ignore the vehicle, to unbelievable canoe or boat safaris on the beautiful rivers and lakes. You can even take an adventure in a hot air balloon or helicopter so you can see the beauty from any perspective. Walking safaris add an entirely different dimension to the experience.”

I was quoted by Travel and Leisure magazine.

The online article "The Best Binoculars for Safari of 2024" is a great article about the need for binoculars when you go on safari.

Even with my long wildlife lenses, I love always having a pair with me to help look for animals and to also see behavior clearer.

Although I don't use any of the binoculars they listed, all the info in the article is great.     The binoculars I use are Zeiss 10 x 25 because they are super compact and lightweight which I need when carrying heavy camera gear.

You can read the article on their website here.

I was quoted in the Travel Africa magazine Edition 102 November 2023-January 2024 (alongside several other people).  Travel Africa magazine is a great resource for traveling to wildlife destinations all throughout Africa.    I love receiving it each quarter.    Many people have comments in the "Your Experiences" section which shows how much gorilla trekking means to people.    See Rwanda for my current content about Rwanda.  I'll be adding more in the next few months.   And if you are interested in gorilla trekking, feel free to contact me for tips and information.
