Gabon

Not a usual safari destination but one that is full of adventure and wildlife.   On this trip, I "met" many new species (Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Red River Hog, Western Lowland Gorilla ) and had a grand adventure.

I traveled there one time in December, 2022.   My favorite part was the new species, the leatherback turtle, and my 10th gorilla trek (first one for the western lowland).   Such a great adventure I had as part of a group trip with The Odyssia Collection.

The below blog posts and YouTube videos are from my personal experiences.  I'm still working on more posts and videos as well as my travel gallery and will post them here when completed.  Be sure to join my email list for updates (you can join below).

Gabon is the largest nesting area in the world for Leatherback turtles. The beaches of Pongara had researches watching for the nesting turtles.

On one late evening, I had the experience to join the naturalists and researchers and saw 3 leatherback turtles.

The turtles can reach up to 6.5 feet long and weight 2000 pounds!

I took these videos with my iPhone 13pro. Because lights can disorient the turtles, only the naturalists handled the lights and they were red.

At the end of the video, you'll see a turtle coming out of the water that was disoriented by us. Because of the lack of lights, we didn't see her until she was on the beach. She went back into the ocean and we hurried away...we were told that she came back to the beach to nest after we passed.

I never want to impact the life of an animal and you can hear me in the video saying "oh shit - is that because of us". We were under the guidance of naturalists and researchers and unfortunately due to the fact that we couldn't have lights, we did impact this turtle -but as I said, she did then come back up to the beach to nest - I was very happy for that.

You can read an article about the experience with some photographs (iPhone 13) as well as some interesting facts about the leatherback turtle nesting at:
